Synthesis occurs in two ATP-dependent steps. The enzyme glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine to form gamma-glutamylcysteine, and glutathione synthetase adds glycine. The first step is rate-limiting and is influenced by cysteine availability and feedback inhibition by GSH. Breakdown involves gamma-glutamyl transferase and subsequent peptidases, which release constituent amino acids for reuse. Because turnover differs among tissues, measurements from blood, plasma, and tissues are not directly interchangeable. Research continues to clarify how compartment-specific pools are regulated in health and disease.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It contains an unusual gamma-glutamyl bond between glutamate and cysteine, which resists cleavage by many peptidases. The reduced form, GSH, carries a thiol group on cysteine and is the dominant intracellular form in most cells. Its structure allows it to participate in redox reactions and to serve as a sulfur donor. The oxidized form, GSSG, consists of two GSH molecules joined by a disulfide bond.
Commercial glutathione is produced by microbial fermentation or chemical synthesis, then purified. Reduced and oxidized grades are offered separately, with purity specifications often exceeding 98 percent. The compound appears in foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats, although cooking and processing can lower amounts. Oral, topical, and inhaled forms are discussed in research and consumer contexts, but absorption and tissue delivery remain active areas of study. Regulatory status varies by country and intended use.
Glutathione is a small sulfur-containing peptide built from glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. Its distinctive feature is a gamma-glutamyl bond between glutamate's side-chain carboxyl group and cysteine's amino group. This linkage resists ordinary peptidases and helps the molecule remain stable inside cells. The reduced thiol form, often abbreviated GSH, is the dominant intracellular species. The oxidized disulfide dimer, GSSG, forms when two reduced molecules link through their cysteine sulfur atoms. The balance between these forms is a common redox indicator.
In living systems, glutathione occurs in millimolar concentrations in many cell types, while extracellular levels are generally much lower. The liver holds a substantial share of the body's total pool, and the molecule participates in reduction, detoxification, and amino acid transport. It also serves as a cofactor for enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase. Because the cysteine residue supplies a reactive thiol, glutathione can donate electrons and become oxidized. Cells regenerate reduced glutathione through glutathione reductase using NADPH.

Cells synthesize glutathione through two ATP-dependent steps: glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine, and glutathione synthetase adds glycine to form the complete tripeptide. Breakdown occurs through gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase and subsequent peptidase reactions, forming the gamma-glutamyl cycle. Within cells, glutathione also forms a disulfide-linked dimer called GSSG when two GSH molecules react. The balance between GSH and GSSG is widely used as an indicator of oxidative conditions, although the ratio can vary by compartment and tissue.
Glutathione supports several cellular processes beyond direct antioxidant action. It serves as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase enzymes, which reduce peroxides and conjugate electrophiles, respectively. The molecule also acts as a reservoir of cysteine, an amino acid that can limit protein synthesis and redox signaling. In human nutrition, oral glutathione is sold as a supplement, but how much intact glutathione reaches tissues after ingestion remains an active research question. Clinical claims about supplementation are not uniformly supported by controlled trials.
Glutathione is a small tripeptide built from glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. Its peptide bond between glutamate and cysteine involves the gamma-carboxyl group rather than the usual alpha-carboxyl group. This structure gives the molecule a reactive thiol on the cysteine residue. The reduced form, often abbreviated GSH, is the predominant intracellular species in many cell types. Because the thiol can donate electrons, glutathione participates in redox chemistry and in the conjugation of reactive molecules.
Quality control for glutathione measurements includes calibration with authenticated standards, internal standards where available, blank correction, and spike recovery checks. Because glutathione can form during sample processing or degrade before analysis, pre-analytical handling is a major source of variability. Interlaboratory comparisons often show differences in reported values due to method-specific calibration and detection principles. Interpretive thresholds are context-dependent, and no single reference range applies across all tissues or matrices. Researchers generally report both reduced and oxidized forms, along with the method and sample handling details.
Quantification of glutathione in biological or food samples commonly uses liquid chromatography coupled to ultraviolet, fluorescence, electrochemical, or mass spectrometric detection. Because the thiol group oxidizes readily, samples are often acidified or derivatized immediately after collection to stabilize reduced glutathione. Enzymatic recycling assays and colorimetric kits offer higher throughput but generally lower specificity than chromatographic methods. Mass spectrometry can distinguish glutathione from related thiols and allow simultaneous measurement of oxidized forms. Reported concentrations depend strongly on sample type, extraction procedure, and analytical platform.
Glutathione is present in most tissues, with especially high concentrations in the liver. It also serves as a cofactor for some enzymes and helps transport amino acids across cell membranes. In plants and microorganisms, glutathione contributes to stress responses and metal handling. The molecule is synthesized in two ATP-dependent steps, first producing gamma-glutamylcysteine and then adding glycine. Because cysteine availability often limits synthesis, dietary and metabolic factors can influence glutathione levels. Research continues to examine how these levels relate to health and disease.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. The peptide bond between glutamate and cysteine uses the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate rather than the alpha-carboxyl group. This unusual linkage protects the molecule from many common peptidases. The cysteine side chain carries a thiol group that can undergo reversible oxidation. Because of this thiol, glutathione participates in redox reactions and helps maintain the reducing environment inside most cells in living systems.

== Natural occurrence == Potassium alum dodecahydrate occurs in nature as a sulfate mineral called alum-(K), typically as encrustations on rocks in areas of weathering and oxidation of sulfide minerals and potassium-bearing minerals. In the past, potassium alum has been obtained from alunite (KAl(SO4)2·2Al(OH)3), mined from sulfur-containing volcanic sediments. Alunite is an associate and likely potassium and aluminium source. It has been reported at Vesuvius, Italy; east of Springsure, Queensland; in Alum Cave, Tennessee; Alum Gulch, Santa Cruz County, Arizona and the Philippine island of Cebu. In order to obtain alum from alunite, it is calcined and then exposed to the action of air for a considerable time. During this exposure it is kept continually moistened with water, so that it ultimately falls to a very fine powder. This powder is then lixiviated with hot water, the liquor decanted, and the alum allowed to crystallize. The undecahydrate also occurs as the fibrous mineral kalinite (KAl(SO4)2·12H2O).
Lysergic acid methylpropylamide (LAMPA, LAMP, or LMP), also known as LMP-55 or as N-methyl-N-propyllysergamide (MPLA), is a structural analogue of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) that has been studied as a potential treatment for alcoholism. In animal studies, LAMPA was found to be nearly equipotent to ECPLA and MIPLA for inducing a head-twitch response. LAMPA appears to be significantly less potent than LSD in humans, producing little to no noticeable effects at doses of 100 μg. It shows reduced-efficacy partial agonism of the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor relative to LSD, which may be responsible for its equivocal hallucinogenic effects. LAMPA is not an explicitly controlled substance in the United States, but may be considered implicitly controlled as it is an isomer of LSD. The drug is not a controlled substance in Canada as of 2025.
Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is an organochlorine compound used as a pesticide and a disinfectant. First produced in the 1930s, it is marketed under many trade names. It can be found as pure PCP, or as the sodium salt of PCP, the latter of which dissolves easily in water. It can be biodegraded by some bacteria, including Sphingobium chlorophenolicum.
== In popular culture == The 1993 film Jurassic Park, which is based on the 1990 novel Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, features dinosaurs that were genetically altered so that they could not produce lysine, an example of engineered auxotrophy. This was known as the "lysine contingency" and was supposed to prevent the cloned dinosaurs from surviving outside the park, forcing them to depend on lysine supplements provided by the park's veterinary staff. In reality, no animal can produce lysine; it is an essential amino acid. In 1996, lysine became the focus of a price-fixing case, the largest in United States history. The Archer Daniels Midland Company paid a fine of US$100 million, and three of its executives were convicted and served prison time. Also found guilty in the price-fixing case were two Japanese firms (Ajinomoto, Kyowa Hakko) and a South Korean firm (Sewon). Secret video recordings of the conspirators fixing lysine's price can be found online or by requesting the video from the U.S. Department of Justice, Antitrust Division. This case gave the basis for the book The Informant: A True Story, and the movie The Informant!.

Buspirone was developed in 1968 and approved for medical use in the United States in 1986. It is available as a generic medication. In 2023, it was the 40th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 15 million prescriptions.
=== Origins (1992–2004) === Julien Rour Chanut grew up in the Essonne department, south of Paris, in France. Mehdi Birouk Thépegnier, born in Morocco (Maghreb), arrived in France at the age of 12. They met in 1992 at a college in Essonne and became friends. Chanut and Thépegnier were passionate about 1990s hardcore punk, heavy metal and grunge. The hardcore scene consisting of bands such as Confusion, Integrity, Only Living Witness, Section 8, and Sheer Terror, and the do-it-yourself philosophy associated with this culture, motivated them to perform music. Chanut found his path between the ages of 13 and 14 by beginning to play hardcore punk. The two friends first stepped onto the stage at around 15 or 16. They grew up in the hardcore punk scene of the 1990s. Thépegnier was a member of Mouvement Colère (lit. 'Anger Movement') and later a bassist in Drowning, which toured as the opening act for All Out War and Merauder. Over time, Chanut and Thépegnier performed in various local bands, including Arkangel (band), Es La Guerilla and Rising Dust. Clément Hanvic was part of their circle; he was the singer of Knockoutz and the bassist of L'Esprit du Clan (lit. 'The Spirit of the Clan'), and performed with Es La Guerilla. The bassist for Knockoutz and Es La Guerilla was Kéo Nackphouminh. Sid-Ahmed Azzouni was a guitarist in Es La Guerilla. After playing electric bass for a while, Thépegnier switched to drums.
With reports that Palestinians resorted to TikTok for promoting their cause after platforms like Facebook and Twitter blocked their content, Israeli analyst Yoni Ben-Menachem called the app a "tool of dangerous influence" inciting violence against Israelis. According to Ynet, the Palestinian militant group Lion's Den gained much of their popularity through TikTok. In February 2023, Otzma Yehudit politician Almog Cohen advocated blocking TikTok for all of East Jerusalem. US lawmakers wanting to ban TikTok accused the platform of pushing pro-Hamas and pro-Palestine content. According to The Times of Israel, antisemitism at the company was "rampant" after the October 7 attacks, allowing anti-Jewish and anti-Israel content to increase on the platform. Prominent Jewish individuals such as Sacha Baron Cohen, Debra Messing, Amy Schumer, and TikTok creator Miriam Ezagui raised the issue with Adam Presser, TikTok's head of operations, and Seth Melnick, its global head of user operations, both also Jewish. TikTok said that a significant proportion of its userbase comes from non-US regions such as the Middle East and Southeast Asia and that hashtags should not be cherry-picked due to differences in the number of views per post and the age of a post or tag. The popularity of pro-Palestine content has also been explained by the app's younger user base, which has shifted its sympathy away from Israel towards the Palestinians.
Progesterone is used as a component of feminizing hormone therapy for transgender women in combination with estrogens and often antiandrogens. However, the addition of progestogens to HRT for transgender women is controversial and their role is unclear. Some patients and clinicians believe anecdotally that progesterone may enhance breast development, improve mood, regulate sleep, and increase sex drive. However, there is a lack of evidence from well-designed studies to support these notions at present. In addition, progestogens can produce undesirable side effects, although bioidentical progesterone may be safer and better tolerated than synthetic progestogens like medroxyprogesterone acetate. Because some believe that progestogens are necessary for full breast development, progesterone is sometimes used in transgender women with the intention of enhancing breast development. However, a 2014 review concluded the following on the topic of progesterone for enhancing breast development in transgender women:

=== Pitfalls === Notably, attempts to surgically remove bone in a FOP patient may result in explosive growth of new bone. While undergoing anesthesia, people with FOP may encounter difficulties with intubation, restrictive pulmonary disease, and changes in the electrical conduction system of the heart. Activities that increase the risk of falling or soft tissue injury should be avoided, as even minor trauma may provoke heterotopic ossification. Intramuscular injections, including immunizations, should likewise be avoided in individuals with FOP, as these can also trigger ossification. Currently, surgery is not usually recommended for people with FOP as it can incite rapid bone formation at incision sites or where sutures have been applied to muscle or connective tissue. Life-saving surgery may be considered; however, developing a surgical plan with input from a FOP specialist may be considered best practice. Surgical release of joint contractures is generally unsuccessful and risks new, trauma-induced heterotopic ossification.
== Mass spectrometric analysis == The digested protein can be analyzed with different types of mass spectrometers such as ESI-TOF or MALDI-TOF. MALDI-TOF is often the preferred instrument because it allows a high sample throughput and several proteins can be analyzed in a single experiment, if complemented by MS/MS analysis. LC/ESI-MS and CE/ESI-MS are also great techniques for peptide mass fingerprinting. A small fraction of the peptide (usually 1 microliter or less) is pipetted onto a MALDI target and a chemical called a matrix is added to the peptide mix. Common matrices are sinapinic acid, Alpha-Cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid, and 2,3-Dihydroxybenzoic acid. The matrix molecules are required for the desorption of the peptide molecules. Matrix and peptide molecules co-crystallize on the MALDI target and are ready to be analyzed. There is one predominantly MALDI-MS sample preparation technique, namely dried droplet technique. The target is inserted into the vacuum chamber of the mass spectrometer and the desorption and ionisation of the polypeptide fragments is initiated by a pulsed laser beam which transfers high amounts of energy into the matrix molecules. The energy transfer is sufficient to promote the ionisation and transition of matrix molecules and peptides from the solid phase into the gas phase. The ions are accelerated in the electric field of the mass spectrometer and fly towards an ion detector where their arrival is detected as an electric signal.
Xi's administration enacted a number of changes to the structure of the CCP and state bodies, especially in a large overhaul in 2018. These reforms have been characterized by the integration of CCP and state bodies. Beginning in 2013, the CCP under Xi has created a series of Central Leading Groups: supra-ministerial steering committees, designed to bypass existing institutions when making decisions, and ostensibly make policy-making a more efficient process. Xi was also believed to have diluted the authority of premier Li Keqiang, taking authority over the economy which has generally been considered to be the domain of the premier. February 2014 oversaw the creation of the Central Leading Group for Cybersecurity and Informatization with Xi as its leader. The State Internet Information Office (SIIO), previously under the State Council Information Office (SCIO), was transferred to the central leading group and renamed in English into the Cyberspace Administration of China. As part of managing the financial system, the Financial Stability and Development Committee, a State Council body, was established in 2017. Chaired by vice premier Liu He during its existence, the committee was disestablished by the newly established Central Financial Commission during the 2023 Party and state reforms. Xi has increased the role of the Central Financial and Economic Affairs Commission at the expense of the State Council. 2018 has seen the deepening the reform of the Party and state institutions.
High-field asymmetric-waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS or RF-DC ion mobility spectrometry) is an ion mobility spectrometry technique in which ions at atmospheric pressure are separated by the application of a high-voltage asymmetric waveform at radio frequency (RF) combined with a static (DC) waveform applied between two electrodes. Depending on the ratio of the high-field and low-field mobility of the ion, it will migrate toward one or the other electrode. Only ions with specific mobility will pass through the device.

GSH is the reduced form with a free thiol group, while GSSG is the oxidized disulfide-linked dimer. Most assays distinguish the two because their balance reflects redox conditions. The names are not interchangeable.
It is synthesized in the body from amino acids, so it is not classified as an essential dietary nutrient for most people. Dietary and supplemental forms are studied for their effects on tissue levels and health markers. Evidence varies by population and outcome.
The phrase highlights its high intracellular concentration and its role in several antioxidant and detoxification reactions. It is not the only antioxidant, and the term can oversimplify its functions. Scientific descriptions usually specify the pathway or enzyme involved.
It is a tripeptide rather than a full protein. Proteins generally contain many amino acids joined by alpha-peptide bonds, while glutathione has three residues and an unusual gamma-glutamyl linkage. That structure affects how enzymes recognize and break it down.
