Common analytical approaches include enzymatic recycling assays, high-performance liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry. Enzymatic recycling measures total glutathione after converting GSSG back to GSH, while separation methods can quantify GSH and GSSG separately. Derivatization may be used to improve detection or stability during analysis. LC-MS/MS offers high specificity and can distinguish glutathione from related thiols and adducts. Each method has different sensitivity, throughput, and susceptibility to interference, so method selection depends on the study question and sample matrix.
For solid glutathione reagents, storage at low temperature and protection from moisture and light are typical precautions. Aqueous solutions can oxidize over time, and pH affects stability; alkaline conditions generally promote thiol oxidation. Some protocols prepare fresh solutions, while others use antioxidants or chelators to limit metal-catalyzed oxidation. Purity and counterion content can vary among commercial preparations, affecting concentration calculations. Certificates of analysis and validated assays help verify identity and purity.
Glutathione functions in redox balance, detoxification, and sulfur amino acid storage. It participates in reactions that help maintain ascorbate and protein thiol status. The molecule serves as a cofactor for several enzymes, including glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These enzymes reduce peroxides and conjugate electrophiles, respectively. Glutathione also contributes to the metabolism of xenobiotics and to the transport of cysteine between tissues. How interorgan transport and tissue-specific regulation shape whole-body pools remains an active area of study.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Its cysteine residue carries a thiol group, which allows the molecule to participate in reduction and oxidation reactions. The compound exists in most living cells, where the reduced form, often abbreviated GSH, is usually more abundant than the oxidized disulfide form, GSSG. Intracellular concentrations are commonly in the millimolar range, while extracellular concentrations are much lower. This uneven distribution supports its role as a major cellular redox buffer.

Quality control for glutathione measurements includes calibration with authenticated standards, internal standards where available, blank correction, and spike recovery checks. Because glutathione can form during sample processing or degrade before analysis, pre-analytical handling is a major source of variability. Interlaboratory comparisons often show differences in reported values due to method-specific calibration and detection principles. Interpretive thresholds are context-dependent, and no single reference range applies across all tissues or matrices. Researchers generally report both reduced and oxidized forms, along with the method and sample handling details.
Quantification of glutathione in biological or food samples commonly uses liquid chromatography coupled to ultraviolet, fluorescence, electrochemical, or mass spectrometric detection. Because the thiol group oxidizes readily, samples are often acidified or derivatized immediately after collection to stabilize reduced glutathione. Enzymatic recycling assays and colorimetric kits offer higher throughput but generally lower specificity than chromatographic methods. Mass spectrometry can distinguish glutathione from related thiols and allow simultaneous measurement of oxidized forms. Reported concentrations depend strongly on sample type, extraction procedure, and analytical platform.
Several analytical methods can quantify glutathione, including high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV or fluorescence detection for separating GSH and GSSG. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) offers higher specificity and sensitivity, often detecting nanomolar concentrations. The enzymatic recycling assay, often called the Tietze method, measures total glutathione by coupling reduction of GSSG to a colorimetric or fluorometric readout. Capillary electrophoresis and electrochemical detection are also used in specialized laboratories. Each method has distinct advantages and limitations regarding throughput, cost, and susceptibility to interference.
Interpreting glutathione measurements requires attention to pre-analytical variables. The GSSG concentration in a sample can rise artificially during storage or processing, making the GSH/GSSG ratio unreliable if not controlled. Reference ranges vary by specimen type, assay, and population, so comparisons across studies are difficult. Plasma glutathione is low and sensitive to hemolysis, while whole blood reflects primarily erythrocyte content. Many studies measure total glutathione rather than the reduced and oxidized forms separately, which limits conclusions about redox status.
Accurate measurement of glutathione begins with careful sample handling. Because GSH oxidizes rapidly to GSSG, samples must be processed quickly or frozen immediately. Acid precipitation with metaphosphoric acid or perchloric acid is common; it lowers pH, precipitates proteins, and helps preserve the reduced form. Chelating agents such as EDTA can limit metal-catalyzed oxidation. For whole blood, hemolysis releases glutathione from erythrocytes, so plasma and serum values differ substantially from whole blood values.
==== Niccolò Figà-Talamanca ==== Niccolò Figà-Talamanca, the secretary-general of the NGO No Peace Without Justice, was one of the original four suspects arrested in the case. On 14 December 2022, Figà-Talamanca was released from prison with an electronic bracelet to track his movements, but the Belgian federal prosecutor successfully appealed the order on 27 December 2022, so Figà-Talamanca went back to prison. Figà-Talamanca was released from prison without conditions by the investigative judge at a hearing on 3 February 2023. Figà-Talamanca's lawyer at the hearings was Barbara Huylebroek. According to a member of his family, Figà-Talamanca remains charged.
== History == Deslorelin was successfully trialed in the U.S. and was approved for veterinary use under certain circumstances. In Europe, it was approved for use in equine assisted reproduction. Ovuplant was withdrawn from the U.S. market following issues with mares which did not become pregnant failing to return to estrus in a timely manner. Techniques were developed where the implant was removed 48 hours after implantation in the mare, however compounded biorelease Deslorelin products were at the time available as well as more commonly used ovulation promoters such as hCG, which did not produce the same failure effect. Upon "Sucromate Equine" receiving FDA-approval, the compounded products were no longer legally available within the U.S., however they remain available in Australia and New Zealand where an approved version is marketed. It is also being trialed in humans to study its efficacy in treatment of breast cancer in women, and in treating precocious puberty and congenital adrenal hyperplasia in male and female children. As of August 2011 this drug was not approved for general use outside the FDA-licensed functions in the U.S., other than within approved clinical trials. Orphan drug status has been designated in the U.S., though approval had not been issued as of 2011.

=== Dextran conjugate nanoparticles === Dextran conjugates are also utilized in nanoparticle drug delivery system formulations. Nanoparticles composted of dextran and stearic acid with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) coating can be loaded with antiviral drugs and be effectively internalized by cells. This nanosystem has the advantages of providing protection against immune responses and providing stability to the encapsulated drug. This technology has applications in the treatment of HIV and AIDS. Dextran can be grafted with folic acid to develop doxorubicin-loaded nanoparticles. Dextran-folic acid nanoparticles effectively target tumors, reduce off-site toxicity, and prolong blood circulation. Dextran-spermine nanoparticles loaded with doxorubicin can achieve targeted and sustained drug release in tumors.

==== Dextromethorphan ==== Dextromethorphan/bupropion, sold under the brand name Auvelity, is a combination medication approved by the US FDA in 2022 for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. The formulation pairs dextromethorphan, an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist and sigma-1 receptor agonist, with bupropion, a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor that also functions as a CYP2D6 enzyme inhibitor. Bupropion is included in the combination to slow the metabolism of dextromethorphan by inhibiting CYP2D6, thereby increasing its bioavailability and allowing dextromethorphan's potential antidepressant effects to be achieved. While the precise mechanism of action in treating depression is not fully understood, it is hypothesized that the medication works by modulating glutamate signaling and influencing other neurotransmitter systems.
According to helium conservationists like Nobel laureate physicist Robert Coleman Richardson, writing in 2010, the free market price of helium has contributed to "wasteful" usage (e.g. for helium balloons). Prices in the 2000s had been lowered by the decision of the U.S. Congress to sell off the country's large helium stockpile by 2015. Richardson posited that the price of helium needed to be multiplied by 20 to eliminate excessive wasting of the gas. In a 2012 paper by Nuttall and colleagues titled "Stop squandering helium", they proposed to create an International Helium Agency that would build a sustainable helium market.

Alcohol dehydrogenase class-3 is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the ADH5 gene. This gene encodes glutathione-dependent formaldehyde dehydrogenase or the class III alcohol dehydrogenase chi subunit, which is a member of the alcohol dehydrogenase family. Members of this family metabolize a wide variety of substrates, including ethanol, retinol, other aliphatic alcohols, hydroxysteroids, and lipid peroxidation products. Class III alcohol dehydrogenase is a homodimer composed of 2 chi subunits. It has virtually no activity for ethanol oxidation, but exhibits high activity for oxidation of long-chain primary alcohols and for oxidation of S-hydroxymethyl-glutathione, a spontaneous adduct between formaldehyde and glutathione. This enzyme is an important component of cellular metabolism for the elimination of formaldehyde, a potent irritant and sensitizing agent that causes lacrymation, rhinitis, pharyngitis, and contact dermatitis.
This identification was later corrected to 258Lr, as later work proved that 257Lr did not have the properties detected, but 258Lr did. This was considered at the time to be convincing proof of synthesis of element 103: while the mass assignment was less certain and proved to be mistaken, it did not affect the arguments in favor of element 103 having been synthesized. Scientists at Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna (then in the Soviet Union) raised several criticisms: all but one were answered adequately. The exception was that 252Cf was the most common isotope in the target, and in the reactions with 10B, 258Lr could only have been produced by emitting four neutrons, and emitting three neutrons was expected to be much less likely than emitting four or five. This would lead to a narrow yield curve, not the broad one reported by the Berkeley team. A possible explanation was that there was a low number of events attributed to element 103. This was an important intermediate step to the unquestioned discovery of element 103, although the evidence was not completely convincing. The Berkeley team proposed the name "lawrencium" with symbol "Lw", after Ernest Lawrence, inventor of the cyclotron. The IUPAC Commission on Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry accepted the name, but changed the symbol to "Lr". This acceptance of the discovery was later characterized as being hasty by the Dubna team.
== Legal status == As of May 2013, Boehringer and Lilly had submitted applications for marketing approval to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Empagliflozin was approved in the European Union in May 2014, and was approved in the United States in August 2014. The FDA required four postmarketing studies: a cardiovascular outcomes trial, two studies in children, and a toxicity study in animals related to the pediatric trials. After the patent expired in 2025, about 37 companies began producing generic empagliflozin in India.
On 15 September 2008, RIA Novosti reported that Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said: "There were excesses by all parties, but this was a war, and when you see on night, that you are being fired upon and you're on the move, while you're advancing to help Tskhinvali, then your response can not be precisely accurate and cannot avoid hurting anyone." On 21 September 2008, Russia-1 TV reported that the wife of Lieutenant Sergey Shevelev, intelligence officer of the peacemaking battalion who died in South Ossetia, said that her husband called her every day and they talked casually. However, on 1 August he sent her text message saying "Everything is normal ... Watch TV. That's all." Konstantin Timerman, the commander of the Russian peacekeeping battalion, said in 2017 that as soon as his combat buddy Sergey Shevelev arrived in Tskhinvali on 1 August 2008, the escalation of the conflict began.

Preanalytical factors such as sample type, time to processing, and stabilization method can change GSH and GSSG amounts. Analytical method and calibration also contribute to variation. Comparing absolute values across studies requires caution.
These assays typically measure total glutathione after oxidizing or reducing steps convert GSSG to GSH. A colorimetric or fluorometric signal is proportional to the recycling reaction. They generally do not report GSH and GSSG separately unless additional steps are used.
Solutions are often prepared fresh and kept cold, with protection from light and oxygen exposure. Chelating agents may reduce metal-catalyzed oxidation. Storage recommendations vary by buffer, pH, and concentration, so protocol-specific guidance should be followed.
Glutathione is built from three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. The linkage involves the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate rather than the alpha-carboxyl group, which is unusual for peptides. This structure protects the bond from some common peptidases.
