Several techniques are used for quantification. Enzymatic recycling assays rely on glutathione reductase and a colorimetric or fluorescent readout, offering sensitivity for total glutathione. High-performance liquid chromatography can separate GSH from GSSG and other thiols, often with UV, fluorescence, or electrochemical detection. Mass spectrometry provides structural confirmation and can quantify low-abundance species when paired with separation. Each approach has trade-offs in specificity, throughput, and equipment requirements, so method selection depends on the research question and available instrumentation.
Stability depends on pH, temperature, oxygen exposure, and trace metals. Aqueous solutions of reduced glutathione are susceptible to oxidation, especially when neutral or alkaline and exposed to air. Transition metal ions can catalyze thiol oxidation, so chelators and inert atmospheres are sometimes used in research settings. Standards are typically stored cold and desiccated, with limited freeze-thaw cycles. Questions remain about how closely in vitro stability data reflect the behavior of glutathione within intact cells and tissues.
Quality control for glutathione focuses on identity, purity, and oxidation state. Certificates of analysis may report assay value, water content, and the presence of GSSG or other impurities. Chromatographic purity is often expressed as a percentage of peak area. Reference standards help laboratories compare results across instruments and batches. Because glutathione is a small, polar molecule, separation from cysteine, gamma-glutamylcysteine, and related thiols can be challenging. Verification often combines more than one analytical technique.
Measuring glutathione requires attention to sample preparation because the molecule oxidizes readily. Blood, tissue, and cell samples are often treated with acid to precipitate proteins and stabilize the thiol. Without such steps, GSH can convert to GSSG or form mixed disulfides during storage. Analytical methods include spectrophotometric assays, high-performance liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry. Each approach has different sensitivity, specificity, and susceptibility to interference from related compounds in complex matrices.
For solid glutathione, storage conditions affect shelf life. The reduced form is typically kept cool, dry, and protected from air and light. Moisture can promote oxidation, while elevated temperatures accelerate degradation. Suppliers often specify storage at or below freezing, sometimes under inert gas. Solutions are less stable than powders and may require preparation shortly before use. Buffers and chelating agents can slow oxidation, but they do not eliminate it. Published stability data vary with matrix, pH, and container.

Commercial glutathione is available in research-grade, food-grade, and supplement-grade forms, and purity specifications differ accordingly. Certificates of analysis commonly report identity by nuclear magnetic resonance or mass spectrometry, purity by HPLC, residual solvents, and heavy metals. Reference standards with assigned purity support calibration, while isotopically labeled glutathione can serve as an internal standard for mass spectrometry. For supplements, label claims may not be independently verified, and regulatory oversight varies by country. Verification often involves third-party testing for identity, potency, and contaminants.
Quantifying glutathione requires distinguishing GSH from GSSG and preventing oxidation during sample preparation. Common approaches include the enzymatic recycling assay, often called the Tietze method, which measures total glutathione after converting GSSG to GSH. HPLC with ultraviolet or fluorescence detection and LC-MS/MS can separate and quantify both forms, sometimes after derivatization of the thiol group. Blood, plasma, and tissue samples differ in matrix and baseline concentrations, so method validation must account for recovery, linearity, and interference. No single assay is universally standard.
Common analytical approaches include enzymatic recycling assays, high-performance liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry. Enzymatic recycling measures total glutathione after converting GSSG back to GSH, while separation methods can quantify GSH and GSSG separately. Derivatization may be used to improve detection or stability during analysis. LC-MS/MS offers high specificity and can distinguish glutathione from related thiols and adducts. Each method has different sensitivity, throughput, and susceptibility to interference, so method selection depends on the study question and sample matrix.
For solid glutathione reagents, storage at low temperature and protection from moisture and light are typical precautions. Aqueous solutions can oxidize over time, and pH affects stability; alkaline conditions generally promote thiol oxidation. Some protocols prepare fresh solutions, while others use antioxidants or chelators to limit metal-catalyzed oxidation. Purity and counterion content can vary among commercial preparations, affecting concentration calculations. Certificates of analysis and validated assays help verify identity and purity.
Measuring glutathione in biological samples requires attention to oxidation, because GSH can convert to GSSG after sample collection. Blood and plasma samples are often treated with acid or alkylating agents to preserve the reduced form. Without stabilization, apparent GSH concentrations can fall while GSSG rises. Differences in sample type, handling delay, and deproteinization method can produce results that are not comparable across studies. Reporting preanalytical details is therefore important for interpreting findings.
The Moscow Metro system is well-known for art, murals, mosaics, and chandeliers. This system started operating in 1935 and promptly became the centerpiece of the city's transportation system. Moreover, the system was a Stalinist tactic to awe and reward the population, as well as help them to appreciate Soviet realist art. The system became the prototype for later large-scale Soviet technologies. Lazar Kaganovich headed the system; he designed the subway so that residents would absorb the values and ethos of Stalinist society as they rode. The artwork of the original 13 stations became nationally and internationally known. For example, the Sverdlov Square subway station featured porcelain bas-reliefs depicting the daily life of Soviet people; in addition, the bas-reliefs at the Dynamo Stadium sports complex glorified sports and the physical prowess of the new "Homo Sovieticus" (Soviet man). The metro was heralded as the symbol of a new social order—a sort of communist cathedral of engineering modernity. Soviet workers performed the labor and created the art, but the main engineering designs, routes, and construction plans were handled by specialists recruited from the London Underground. The Britons called for tunneling rather than the "cut-and-cover" technique; preferred escalators over lifts; and designed the routes and the rolling stock. The paranoia of Stalin and the NKVD (Soviet secret police) was evident when the NKVD arrested many British engineers for espionage—that is, for gaining an in-depth knowledge of the city's physical layout.
== Ureas == Urea (O=C(NH2)2) is more basic at oxygen than simple amides owing to the combined pi-donation from the two amino groups. One consequence is that the inventory of urea complexes is large, including many homoleptic derivatives. Urea forms a broader range of complexes, reflected by the existence of [M(urea)6](ClO4)3 (M = Ti, Mn). As for other complexes of carboxamide ligands, the MOC(NH2)2 core of urea is planar with a bent M-O-C angle. Biuret (H2NC(O)N(H)C(O)NH2) is a derivative of urea but with two amido groups. Biuret forms a variety of metal complexes, e.g. [Cu(H2NC(O)NHC(O)NH2)2]2+. In addition to the parent urea and biuret, many derivatives are known where N-H is replaced by alkyl or aryl.
== Abbreviations and nomenclature == Abbreviations for "arbitrary unit" include: arb. unit, arb. u., AU, and a.u. Among these, "AU" and "a.u." are common abbreviations for astronomical units and atomic units. For this reason, Physical Review journals, the Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, and an increasing number of other academic journals, recommend against using "a.u." (Jpn. J. Appl. Phys recommends "arb. unit" instead). In UCUM, arbitrary unit is represented as "[arb'U]". While arbitrary unit is not a formally recognized unit, IUPAC and IFCC recognize the need to deal with "unknown units", and decided in 2008 to use the term "procedure defined unit" in their database. The decision forbids using factors or denominators in conjunction with p.d.u. (such as "p.d.u./L").
2002 Winter Olympic bid scandal – a number of IOC members were forced to resign after it was uncovered that they had accepted inappropriately valuable "gifts" in return for voting for Salt Lake City to hold the Games. 2002 Winter Olympics figure skating scandal – dual gold medals were awarded in pairs figure skating to Canadian pair Jamie Salé and David Pelletier, as well as to Russian pair Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze, after allegations of collusion among judges. Lochtegate – four United States swimmers at the 2016 Summer Olympics including Ryan Lochte were involved in a scandal around an accusation being victims of armed robbery, which ultimately concluded with fines, loss of sponsorships, and statements of apology from the swimmers and various oversight organizations. Russian doping scandal – Russia has the most (51) Olympic medals stripped for doping violations – four times the number of the second country (Belarus). From 2011 to 2015, more than a thousand Russian competitors in various sports, including summer, winter, and Paralympic sports, benefited from a cover-up with no indication that the program has ceased since then.
Drug packages belonging to the organization have been marked with the Star of David, Israeli flags were raised and religious symbols (such as the Star of David) were displayed on the walls in several locations alongside the faction's initials.

=== Base-pairing === Canonical bases may have either a carbonyl or an amine group on the carbons surrounding the nitrogen atom furthest away from the glycosidic bond, which allows them to base pair (Watson-Crick base pairing) via hydrogen bonds (amine with ketone, purine with pyrimidine). Adenine and 2-aminoadenine have one/two amine group(s), whereas thymine has two carbonyl groups, and cytosine and guanine are mixed amine and carbonyl (inverted in respect to each other).
A 2023 systematic review found that paroxetine was among the SSRIs most frequently reported in PSSD case reports, alongside escitalopram, citalopram, sertraline, and fluoxetine. Paroxetine's high rate of on-treatment sexual dysfunction relative to other SSRIs, combined with its severe withdrawal profile, may make persistent post-discontinuation sexual effects particularly difficult for patients and clinicians to distinguish from withdrawal symptoms. In 2019, the European Medicines Agency's Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC) recommended that product labels for all SSRIs and SNRIs, including paroxetine, be updated to state that sexual dysfunction may be long-lasting even after treatment is stopped. Health Canada followed with similar label updates in 2021. In 2024, Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration aligned all SSRI and SNRI product information to reflect this risk.
In June 2020, HHS announced an unusual agreement with Gilead in which HHS agreed to Gilead's wholesale acquisition price, HHS would continue to work together with state governments and drug wholesaler AmerisourceBergen to allocate shipments of remdesivir vials to American hospitals through the end of September 2020, and in exchange, during that three-month timeframe (July, August, and September), American patients would be allocated over 90% of Gilead's projected remdesivir output of more than 500,000 treatment courses. Absent from these announcements was any discussion of allocation of remdesivir production to the approximately 70 countries omitted from Gilead's generic drug licensing agreements—including much of Europe and countries as populous as Brazil, China, and Mexico—or the 127 countries listed on those agreements (during the time it will take for Gilead's generic licensees to ramp up their own production). As the implications of this began to sink in, several countries publicly confirmed the next day that they already had adequate supplies of remdesivir to cover current needs, including Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom. In August 2020, the FDA broadened the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for remdesivir to include all hospitalized patients with suspected or laboratory-confirmed COVID‑19, irrespective of the severity of their disease. The Fact Sheet was updated to reflect the new guidance.

== Function == This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the microtubule-associated protein family. The proteins of this family are thought to be involved in microtubule assembly, which is an essential step in neurogenesis. The product of this gene is a precursor polypeptide that presumably undergoes proteolytic processing to generate the final MAP1B heavy chain and LC1 light chain. Gene knockout studies of the mouse microtubule-associated protein 1B gene suggested an important role in development and function of the nervous system. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described.
=== Purity determination (w/w NMR) === While NMR is primarily used for structural determination, it can also be used for purity determination, provided that the structure and molecular weight of the compound is known. This technique requires the use of an internal standard of known purity. Typically this standard will have a high molecular weight to facilitate accurate weighing, but relatively few protons so as to give a clear peak for later integration e.g. 1,2,4,5-tetrachloro-3-nitrobenzene. Accurately weighed portions of the standard and sample are combined and analysed by NMR. Suitable peaks from both compounds are selected and the purity of the sample is determined via the following equation.
It was demonstrated, that muscle cells, that lack AMPD1, stock and consume significantly more glutamate, and produce more alanine in this state, compared to healthy controls, which indicates occurrence of a higher concentration of pyruvate in the cell during exercise. The pool of AMP also grows bigger than in the controls, which would cause higher rate of glucose liberation from glycogen. This state can last for as long as glycogen is available, and can be prolonged by constantly eating carbohydrate-rich food. If the load on muscles is greater than the body's ability to recycle lactate back into glucose, lactate will start to build up in the blood. Once lactate reaches its renal re-absorption threshold (5–6 mmol/L in general population), it gets lost to urine, wasting many calories (and producing bright matte yellow particles on surfaces where urine dries). At about the same time the kidney will also start correcting blood acidity by acidifying urine. Overly acidic urine causes irritation that feels like a frequent urge to urinate (with little volume) and a "hot" urine. In order to excrete lactate, kidney must also excrete magnesium as an obligatory cation, which may lead to acute and chronic magnesium deficiency. Supplementary magnesium in the form of lactate or citrate may be rapidly lost in the same way. Because magnesium is essential to aerobic metabolism, over time, magnesium loss may lead to a vicious cycle, where the citric acid cycle is further down-regulated, lactate production is increased, and magnesium loss is increased again.

Common methods include enzymatic recycling assays, liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry. Many protocols separate reduced glutathione from its oxidized disulfide form before detection.
The ratio compares reduced glutathione with its oxidized dimer. It is used as an indicator of redox status, although the value depends strongly on sample handling and analytical method.
Glutathione can oxidize quickly after a sample is collected. Acidification, cooling, and chelators are often used to reduce artifactual changes before analysis.
Common methods include spectrophotometric enzyme cycling assays, HPLC with UV or fluorescence detection, and LC-MS/MS. Detection often requires derivatization because glutathione lacks a strong chromophore. Method choice depends on the sample type and the required sensitivity.
